Unicorn Post
‘It was a day full of RAINBOWS. And I was playing picnic in my TREE HOUSE…when all of a sudden I heard a KNOCK on my door. It was a unicorn. I LOVE unicorns.’ Concerned in case the creature is lost, the little girl narrator, tells the visitor not to worry. ‘I will find you a new home!’ she tells it and off they go together. The first stop is a pet shop, then a farm (the food was DISGUSTING there), followed by the fairground where the candy floss was delicious but the unicorns on the carousel wouldn’t even stop to say hello!. Next comes a castle – a magical place where a sad farewell is said. Back at her treehouse our narrator feels very sad. Has the unicorn really found his perfect forever home?
Emma Yarlett’s vibrant mixed media illustrations enhance the warm feeling of the telling, making the book a sweet delight from beginning to end. Its interactive nature means that it’s best shared with one child or a few, who can have fun lifting the flaps and exploring the leaflets, noticeboard, map and letter, which augment the story with humorous details such as the ‘purrfect’ puns at Pet Mart and the poster of Oak Tree Farm written by ‘Farmer Barney Yard’.
