Wednesday is for Wiggling
Illustrator: Holly SterlingFor the little girl narrator of this book, each day of the week means something different. She begins the description of each day with an alliterative declaration: ‘MONDAY is for moping.’ This is because her Mama has to work and drops her little one off at nursery; the moping though is short-lived. TUESDAY, we hear is for tiptoeing. Dressed in a pink tutu and matching ballet shoes and ribbon, she attends Madame Svetlana’s dance class, having been dropped off by her childminder, Mandy.
A different experience takes place on subsequent days: WEDNESDAY (her Mama’s day off) is for wiggling. It’s also for cake baking, sharing books, hugging and snuggling. ‘THURSDAY is for thinking!’ and she’s taken to the library by Mandy – a time for thought-provoking book sharing. ‘FRIDAY is for friends!’ This means her pal Ming comes home with her for a playdate. Saturday is spent at Gramma and Grandpa’s allotment and later learning how to make paper cranes. SUNDAY is for riding a scooter with Daddy along the canal bank and generally catching up with the week’s events as they play in the park. Goodness, what a busy schedule but the characters clearly relish their time together and the young narrator obviously feels loved. Her parents are separated but Holly Sterling’s warm illustrations show the strength of this love in every spread and complement the lively text very well and together offer a good starting point for discussion
