Ug-a-Lug, Four Cavemen and a Prehistoric Pencil
Illustrator: Simon RickertyThis book is enormous fun, and has lots of appeal for young readers, who will just love the invented language. A small boy adores drawing, his favourite subjects being four cavemen, whom he names Colin, Clive, Carlos and Flint. If only they were real! When the boy’s pot of pencils is knocked over, great adventures begin. ‘Ug-a loof?’ ‘DOOF,’ replies Flint. ‘OGGY OGGY ERF ERF!’ ‘UG UG!’ ‘LOOFA LOOFA!’ ‘HUNGA HUNGA!’ So the plan is agreed, what they should do with this great big pencil. There follows chewing, carving and chopping, ‘OOK, WEEL!’ said Clive. Turn the page and WOW, there it is. They have invented the wheel, and used the rest of the pencil to build a car!’ ‘MUGGA, HUGGA, LUGGA, RUGGA!’ chorus the cavemen. Colin is the one with brains, and when he says ‘OOF,’ the others stop and listen to each one of his plans. Disasters do befall them, but between them (and the boy drawing the pictures of course,) they make the adventures conclude happily. Oodles of charm here, the quite delightful drawings begging to be copied, and both the characters and story lines are bound to amuse. Great for class drama as well as art work. All readers will love the string of sausages… and the hungry tiger! And a fabulously irresistible blurb on the back cover!
