Let's Make Some Great Art

Author: Marion Deuchars

Deuchars’ book rises above the plethora of ‘how to draw’ books in that it is beautifully designed, visually literate and… fun. Books that introduce children to art, either through doing/making or through a journey around the great figures and movements of art history, tend all too often to be patronising or formulaic. But Deuchars uses her own understanding as a designer-illustrator to introduce concepts of basic design and form through playful projects that make relevant and meaningful reference to a range of important artists. It is a book that is designed to be drawn on by children of all ages. The suggested exercises are all based on art school projects that will help children learn to see and to think visually and independently. The coarse surfaced paper and general sketchbook feel immediately invite participation and the book will be even more appealing once plastered with children’s contributions.
