Little Rebels Award opens for 10th Anniversary Year and reveals Judging Panel

November 22, 2021/in news /by Andrea Reece

Submissions are now open for the 2022 Little Rebels Award for Radical Fiction which celebrates children’s books which promote social equality and social justice.

2022 marks ten years of the Little Rebels Award. Its organisers hope to expand the educational reach of the prize next year by producing physical and digital resources that can be used by librarians and teachers to encourage children to read and engage with the shortlisted books.

The judging panel receives a boost too. Author-illustrator, Emily Haworth-Booth, reading development and children’s book consultant, Jake Hope, and Reflecting Realities author, Farrah Serroukh will be joining educator, Shaun Dellenty and Gays The Word bookshop manager, Jim MacSweeney. Submissions to the award are now open.

Publishers are invited to submit relevant books first published in 2021. Full submission guidelines can be found online. The closing date for nominations is 17 January 2022. The shortlist will be announced in April 2022 with the winning announcement in early July.

Last year’s prize went to A. M. Dassu for Boy Everywhere (Old Barn Books 2020). The prize is administered by booksellers Letterbox Library and Housmans Bookshop on behalf of the Alliance of Radical Booksellers. The winner’s prize includes £2,000 funded by The Barry Amiel and Norman Melburn Trust. Outgoing Judges are: Patrice Lawrence, Darren Chetty and Emily Drabble.
