A Lot of Silly
Illustrator: David BarrowThis is a poetry collection which unashamedly has the sole intent to generate laughter, and in times when reading for pleasure seems ever more threatened perhaps this is exactly what is required. You will not find poems being used as a vehicle to broach difficult topics here, instead there are lines on the Tallest Cat and roadworks for witches, a circus where elephants are watching the people perform and sharks residing in the bathtub. Children are encouraged to let go and laugh, to enjoy both expanding the limits of their imagination and the inevitable love of language and word play which will occur when reading these poems aloud.
Accompanying each poem are equally exuberant and imaginative illustrations, sure to also provoke outbursts from the audience and encouragement to perhaps not just read for pleasure but also to draw in an imaginative and free manner.
Though the rhymes and structure could perhaps be considered a little predictable, and this may make the collection less favourable in the classroom, as we continue to navigate these uncertain times this title certainly has a place in reminding young readers and their carers of the value in a shared, joyful experience.
