An Anthology of Christmas

Author: Auriol BishopIllustrators: Angela Rizza, Daniel Long

What do you think of when you think of Christmas? Christmas trees? Robins? The North Pole? You’ll find them all in this handsome anthology together with many more seasonal delights from the natural world. Each entry is illustrated with a mix of photographs and illustrations and reveals all sorts of Christmas facts and traditions from Europe and around the world. We learn the theories about the ‘Star in the East’ that the Bible tells us led the Wise Men to Bethlehem, and there’s a page dedicated to their gifts of Gold, Frankincense and Myrrh, as well as another on camels, with a gorgeous photograph that shows off their extra long eyelashes. I didn’t know that cranberries grow in bogs, providing a home for wolf spiders, or that cuetlaxóchitl, the true name of Poinsettias means ‘flower that perishes like all that is pure.’ Each page gifts young readers fascinating facts and information and while this will provide perfect December reading, as we count down to the big day, it will be enjoyed throughout the year.
