Barbara Throws a Wobbler
From having a ‘sock problem’ in the morning, to finding a ‘strange pea’ at lunch and then dropping her ice cream in the park, Barbara has undoubtedly had a bad day. Her friends are solicitous, but she’s not having their sympathy, and suddenly, she produces a huge Wobbler. This Wobbler is very large and very pink, ‘gloopy and heavy, like an angry jelly’, and sits on Barbara’s head. When Barbara talks, the Wobbler copies her every word, and she definitely does NOT want a cuddle or friends asking if she is okay, or even a lick of ice cream. When she tries to stop the Wobbler repeating her words, he tells her that he can’t because, after all, she has made him, so he is part of her. The Wobbler also makes it clear that only she can un-make him. Will there be more wobbles that day? There is a doubt left in Barbara’s mind as well as in ours, but for now, she is happy. Wonderfully wacky pictures and lots of humour make this a jolly jape, full of colourful animals and so much humour that one gets the message without even realising it. Cheerful and sunny in spite of the theme.
