Beryl Goes Wild

Author: Jane Simmons

Beryl lives somewhat unhappily on a farm. One day she is selected with a whole lot of other pigs to go to who knows where. Alone of all the pigs on the lorry to escape when there is an accident, she experiences a string of adventures which include making friends, being cast out for being different and reconciling groups of other pigs. Told in a realistic but sympathetic style throughout, the book is rich in opportunities for discussion and reflection about themes all of which are pertinent to children today. Well worth buying for the library and also the classroom, where teachers could include the book in not just literacy classes, but also PSHE and Drama for starters.
