Big Yellow Sunflower

Author: Frances Barry

Review also includes:

Little Green Frog, 978-1406306712

These two ‘fold out and find out’ novelty information books are original, bold and distinctive. The clever design revolves around a semi-octagonal format which is also key to the interior design, with pages opening out concentrically from the back panel. Once all pages have unfolded, the rear panel forms the centrepiece of a book that has transformed into a sunflower (with each page being the petals), or a series of lily pads. There is something infectious about the desire to open the pages in order to see the final shape of the book and, incidentally, to discover how frogspawn turns into frogs or a seed grows into a sunflower. The illustrations involve clever use of collage. Younger readers may tear the pages when trying to turn them in the traditional manner, but provided that they are read with an adult, Big Yellow Sunflower and Little Green Frog will no doubt withstand the many readings to which they will be subjected.
