Brave Mouse
Illustrator: Michelle CartlidgeWe see Little Mouse first as a timid child, afraid of many things, but he has a little voice inside him that helps him through the bad times – fear of the babysitter, of the swimming pool, new foods, the dentist, and shadows in his room. The voice tells him he’s a ‘brave, brave mouse’ (in rhyming couplets), and he learns to face up to each fear and get on with life. But he also comes to know that there are some things that it might be okay to be afraid of. When his playground friends say he will be a ‘scaredy-mouse’ if he doesn’t play on the big equipment, he chooses the bouncy duck instead and feels brave because he’s been able to say no. Soft, cheery yellows predominate in Brave Mouse’s life, along with a cosy home, a favourite teddy, a comfort rag, and loving parents. The illustrations show us quite clearly that the fond support he gets is what really fuels his inner voice.
