Bullies and Gangs

Author: Julie Johnson

Review also includes:

Bullying, ***, Sally Hewitt, Franklin Watts ‘How can I deal with’, 32pp, 978-0749670856

Two books on the common, heartbreaking problem of bullying. While both are aimed at children from six or seven up, Bullies and Gangs is more sophisticated and contains information about the pros and cons of being in a gang as the title suggests. Both use case studies to show different ways of being bullied, and both show us something of how and why bullies become so unpleasant. There is much emphasis on the importance of telling someone trusted that the bullying is taking place and also on coping strategies of various kinds. If the answers to the bullying problem can seem somewhat simplistic, the problem itself is faced directly and specifically. Large print is a highlight of Bullying, and both books feature colour photographs. Bullies and Gangs contains cartoons as well. Each book has an index and a list of organisations that can help, and Bullying has notes for parents and carers. Useful for home or school.
