Captain Small Pig

Author: Martin WaddellIllustrator: Susan Varley

Take the masterly author of modern classics Owl Babies and Farmer Duck, and add the talented artist for Badger’s Parting Gifts, and we have a recipe for success! Small Pig wants to go boating on the lake. Whilst Old Goat encourages each of Small Pig’s enthusiastic requests (‘There might be a very small whale…’ ‘Of course you can row!’) Turkey manages only a negative response each time. ‘There aren’t any whales.’ ‘You’re too small to row.’ Eventually the two old friends start to snooze, leaving Small Pig in charge of the boat. It drifts towards the inevitable disaster but Old Goat remains unruffled and carries the sleeping Small Pig to his bed. The gentle illustrations match the text well, with a soft colour palette and characters with highly expressive faces.
