Come Back Gosling

Author: Anne BoothIllustrator: David Litchfield

A little girl has the love of a small gosling and together they explore a mutual love of stories. The girl loves to read aloud to her friend, high up and cosy in her treehouse. Visits to the library supply constantly different worlds to enter, but each world is never quite right for the girl. When she hides a book from Gosling, refusing to share its contents, Gosling gives way to curiosity and at night he hunts for the book in question. When Gosling accidentally falls from the tree house and discovers his ability to fly, (seen in the hidden book,) he flaps away and eventually joins a V of geese flying high. The story resolves with Gosling returning the following Spring, the friends joyfully reuniting. The colours are vivid throughout and portray well the girl’s and the gosling’s feelings as they explore their shared yet different worlds. Every picture extends the reader’s understanding of the special friendship between the child and the bird, and the rich use of colour makes the story come alive. The endpapers glow with bright sunshine and set the scene for all the adventures to come. Delightful.
