Dinosaur Trap
Illustrator: Momoko AbeFelix was very keen to catch a dinosaur and built a trap in his garden. He tried sausages as bait but only managed to catch a cat. When he tried chocolate cake he caught his next-door neighbour Izzy. Finally, in the middle of the night, using cheese as bait he was successful. He had caught an enormous dinosaur in his trap, much to his surprise. After initial consternation from Felix’s parents the dinosaur quickly became a local attraction with people travelling from far and wide to visit. However, one day Felix looked into the dinosaur’s eyes and realised just how sad he was. What should he do?
This is a short and engaging story from a very experienced children’s writer. The premise presents an imaginative take on the perennially fascinating subject of dinosaurs. With the theme of animal welfare at its core the book considers the issue of keeping wild creatures in captivity, whether extinct, endangered or fantastical.
The illustrations complement the text beautifully and are particularly effective in bringing Felix’s ingenious trap to life and showing the excitement the trapped dinosaur caused in the neighbourhood.
