Dustbin Dad
Illustrator: Russell AytoMorality tale or rollicking rhyme? This book is a lot of both, all within one comic wrapper. Recounting the story of a Dad with a penchant for eating everything in sight, it’s a warning to all children not to leave food lying around and to all vets not to leave Puss-Pep-Up-Powder lying around. The consequences are hilarious.
The story is voiced by one of Dustbin Dad’s children – a clever decision because when Dad damages doors, breaks furniture and smashes crockery with innocent impunity, the authority and reliability of the narrator is beyond doubt.
Openings are cleverly divided and double page spreads used to pace the reader and also to maximise the humorous potential. Quirky, block-like illustrations are so detailed that the book could also work as a picture book, rendering it particularly suitable to share with an early reader. More confident readers will have great fun reading the poem for themselves.
So, an hilarious poetry book, a pacy and detailed picture book and, above all, a great book for sharing.
