Eddie's Garden and How to Make Things Grow
A simple introduction to gardening and growing things in picture-book format. Eddie wants a garden of his own and with the help of toddler sibling Lily and Mum creates a plot to grow vegetables and flowers. Sarah Garland’s expressive pencil and colour wash illustrations capture the sense of expectation as Eddie busily digs the soil, sows the seeds, waters and weeds. Mum ensures that it all remains fun (sticks for the runner beans are arranged wigwam fashion to make a bean den) and that little Lily is involved but not ingesting worms. Soon the garden is flourishing with sunflowers, pumpkins, peas, carrots and lettuces, and the harvested produce is enjoyed in a celebratory picnic. Advice for grown-up gardeners is included in the final pages, with suggestions on suitable seeds for small hands and ideas for using containers or windowsills, as well as tips on keeping pests at bay without resorting to chemicals. Ideal for sharing as a picture book in advance of starting a first garden.
