Elephant's Story

Author: Harriet BlackfordIllustrator: Manja Stojic

A gentle tale of a young elephant calf growing up with her family in the African savanna. We learn that these social animals live in big family groups, looking after one another, scooping up the baby elephant that has slipped in the mud at the waterhole, reassuring and greeting a new member of the herd. As time passes our elephant in turn helps keep watch over a new sibling and rescues it from danger. The picture-book feel of the simple text is reinforced by soft-edged artwork that paints the African plain in bold colours. A final page gives further information about elephants and the need to protect their natural habitat, finishing with the suggestion: ‘Perhaps you too can help protect the elephants.’ A pity that there are no website links or signposts to help children to follow this up.
