Giddy-up! Let's Ride!

Inspired by the nursery rhyme, ‘This is the way the lady rides’, McDonnell has painted eleven flights – or rather rides – of fancy featuring appropriately attired small children mounted on a variety of horses and other animals. There is a princess, a knight, a drummer, a clown, a raja, even a fairy, each riding their steed against a bold background wash and captioned in large print by ‘This is the way the … rides’ and noisy accompaniments. In the final spread all the riders are shown at play together.
