Ginger was bullied at junior school: fat, shy and lonely, she decided that the only way to be popular in high school was to re-invent herself and hide behind a veneer of smart clothes, make-up and Shannon, the coolest and most ruthless girl in her year.

Things were going well until Sam comes into her life. An irrepressible individual, he reminds her that conformity means sacrificing who you really are. Suddenly, Ginger has to make a choice – stay with Shannon and ignore what matters to her most or hide behind the very real fear of losing all her hard-won popularity and being, once more, on the outside looking in.

Ginger Snaps is almost a catalogue of teenage doubts, fears and traumas – the crush on a teacher, the loss of friends and popularity, the joys and agonies of first love, the slow journey towards the final destination of knowing who you are.
