How Far Are the Stars?
Illustrator: Emilia Dziubak‘Mama…’ says the little cat from their spot by the window. ‘How big is the world?’ Thus begins this gentle tale of curiosity wherein a patient Mama cat encourages her little one to expand its horizons as the two wander and explore, imagining and looking throughout the day till darkness falls and the kitten finally shows signs of tiredness. In their meandering they realise that not only is the world far, far bigger than they could imagine, indeed it is ‘big, wide, tall, deep and shared by everyone …’ as the little cat declares; and in that respect it’s ‘just like love.’ So Mama cat says as she curls up beside her offspring and they both fall asleep beneath the stars.
Just the thing to encourage curiosity in the very young; it’s satisfying with lots of comparative language, alliteration and other playful phraseology that make it a delight to read aloud. Equally, the illustrations are immersive, and we really feel as though we too are enjoying an atmospheric exploration along with the feline pair.
Gently educative in an unobtrusive way.
