I Follow the Fox
Rob Biddulph brings his signature sparkle to this story of a lost toy. Somewhere on a trip to the park to enjoy the snow a little boy’s much-loved toy fox goes missing. The boy and his family search high and low but there’s no sign of Little Fox and that night, ‘now all I see/ Is the space next to Big Fox where Little should be’ he says. The arrival deep in the night of a beautiful fox adds magic to the story. The boy follows her, moving so fast that his feet leave the ground, through the empty streets and out into the country, midnight scenes beautifully rendered in rich blues and greens. As the tension increases, our young hero is able to help the fox and rescue her cub. As they return just as dawn is breaking, the fox points out Little Fox left on a tree for his owner to find. The mix of magic and family is just right, the sense of danger and loss perfectly balanced with the comfort and security of home. As ever, Biddulph’s rhyming text moves us along at spritely pace, and this magical journey will be enjoyed time after time.
