Letters to a Dog

Author: Piers TordayIllustrator: Alice McKinley

Why would you write a letter to a dog? It’s something for Jamie to do as he waits anxiously in hospital for an operation that will change his life. He has always wanted a dog – a dog he can adopt from the local dog home. His father has refused to countenance this. Jamie has decided not to speak to his father; they no longer communicate. Nurse Shirley has suggested the letter-writing as a distraction. But imagine Jamie’s surprise when Dog writes back….

The reality of Jamie’s situation, his complicated feelings – especially those around the death of his mother, his need to talk about it – are effectively presented through the device of the letters Jamie writes. Through them his views, his emotions, especially as he faces an operation on his heart become real for the reader. However, there is plenty of humour which further lifts the narrative. Then the final twist (which some may have already suspected) brings the whole to a satisfying conclusion. Torday’s skill as a writer has created a lively, well-crafted story with a character who speaks directly to the young reader. The illustrations by Alice McKinley add that important visual element. The Barrington Stoke format ensures that this will attract a wide range of readers. This is an excellent addition to any library – a story rooted in a reality that will have a wide appeal. To be recommended.
