Little Monkey's One Safe Place

Author: Richard EdwardsIllustrator: Susan Winter

This is a gentle, comforting story, with text beautifully supported by Winter’s softly pastelled illustrations. Little Monkey plays high in the treetops, until, tired out, he finds a comfortable branch upon which to curl up for a nap. Then the colour palette changes, for a thunder storm crashes all around him, scaring him mightily. He runs to seek his Mother. She tells him, ‘You’re safe now. You’ve always got one safe place.’ Little Monkey, not being sure where this place might be, goes off to find it. More frights ensue as he searches through the jungle. At last, smiles, wriggles and hugs confirm that he has found it, wrapped in his mother’s arms. In the drawings, there is great empathy between the mother and child characters, enriching this simple but thoughtful tale. When reassurance is needed, a fine book to share.
