This third picture book about Mac the mischievous cat has a Christmas theme. It is a gentle, warm story full of family festive spirit where well-drawn characters experience real feelings and show it in their words.
In his desire to grab the sparkling star atop the Christmas tree, Mac unwittingly uncovers a missing ring. Meanwhile Catriona’s worries that in looking at her present before the big day she’s not only forfeited it but also ruined Christmas, are subtly shown and deeply felt. Finally the symbolism of the treetop star and the night-time Christmas star is understated and sweet without being saccharine, bringing us back to Mac, where it all began. The soft, gentle water-colour drawings are a perfect accompaniment to this tale.
