Martin Luther King: Father of the Civil Rights Movement

Author: Liz Gogerly

This is a short, highly readable account of the life of Martin Luther King in which the author utilises the devices more usually associated with the novelist’s craft, for example, the use of dialogue, as well as making the reader privy to the thought processes of the main characters. This approach has the effect of pouring fresh life into the dry bones of biography (even of such well known figures as Martin Luther King) and should be particularly appealing to young readers who are invited to share the inner lives of the characters. This biography is also particularly strong on illuminating the ethical and social foundations of Martin Luther King’s life and work, and manages to be both edifying and a page-turner.

Finally, this book features at the end a ‘Timeline’, which states the main events of his life as well as a Quiz, making it classroom friendly.
