Muslims in Britain

Author: Fiona Macdonald

The publication of this book can in some respects be regarded as a welcome break from the negative stereotyping that has come to characterise the portrayal of Islam and Muslims during recent times.

It is a well researched book and presents a more balanced perspective on the lives of Muslims in the UK. The book focuses on all aspects of their lives and not solely on the religious aspects. It is organised into relevant chapters. In addition to explaining the basic principles of the faith it also provides a historical perspective with respect to the arrival of Muslims in Britain and mentions some of the contributions they have made to British society. It also details some of the problems encountered by the community.

The book is amply illustrated with a variety of photographs; however it would have been more appropriate to include a wider variety of illustrations depicting more socio-economic groups as well as more Muslim women who choose not to wear the hijab (headscarf) as these comprise a significant proportion of Muslim women in the UK. The book also contains a useful glossary of terms.

In summary this book does provide an additional and useful resource in the classroom. It should however be noted that some statements would benefit from further amendment e.g. contrary to what the author has stated, many Muslims do not feel mixed-faith education causes problems for their children.
