Nen and the Lonely Fisherman
Illustrator: James MayhewNen is a merman living in a magical hidden under sea world. Feeling something is missing in his life Nen becomes increasingly interested in ‘the world above’ much to Pelagios, his father’s, consternation. Pelagios distrusts humans, he sees the damage they cause to the oceans and wants his son to stay away from them.
One night a lonely fisherman called Edward hears mysterious sounds drifting towards him, it is the sound of Nen singing. Edward sets off in his boat and meets Nen. The encounter is magical for both of them and they continue to meet at night, their feelings for each other developing. Pelagios watches until he can contain his frustration no longer; he causes a storm to rage casting Ernest overboard. Nen is desperate to find Ernest and searches the ocean high and low until he finds him, carrying him safely to shore.
Based on the story of The Little Mermaid this version is reimagined with a same sex love story, full of hope, warmth and love. There is an environmental message too pointing out that the human race is adversely affecting the oceans.
The lyrical text evokes is perfectly matched by the illustrations which create the beauty of the undersea world and nighttime encounters beautifully. The books design and sparkly cover adds to the magic.
