Newspaper Boy and Origami Girl
Another superb title from a great story-teller, this book has the colours and illustrative style we have come to associate with this justly celebrated author. It’s an exciting tale: lonely newspaper boy Joey is rescued from bullies by his newspapers! They transform into our super hero ‘Origami Girl’ who back-flips and somersaults her way through the chase and final confrontation with gangs of bullies, robbers and rascals delivering their ill-gotten gains to an old crook. She’s a formidable force: ‘…cartwheeling and knocking them over like skittles.’ .She helps Joey get back the money stolen from him by making origami wings so they can fly over the city to follow his bullies. All the crooks are heading for an abandoned building by the river and while Joey watches from the roof, Origami Girl crashes through the skylight onto the rabble. Their leader tries to escape through the back door but Joey spots him and jumps right on top of him using his newspaper bag as a parachute! The fat crook is speedily delivered to the River Police by Joey and his new super hero friend. While stolen goods are being reclaimed by grateful people, Joey notices Origami Girl unfold herself back snugly into a bundle of papers in his bag… ready for the next adventure. It’s a fantastic read.
