Pete and the Five-a-side Vampires

Author: Malachy DoyleIllustrator: Hannah Doyle

This young fiction book, set in the Welsh town of Llani, contains five stories about Pete and his Basset Hound, Blob. Pete thinks sleeping is a waste of time and prefers to go wandering around town at night to see if anything interesting is going on – which it often is! He and Blob join in a vampire football match, turn into werewolves temporarily, meet a little miner called a bwca, save the town from a hundred Hounds from Hell, and see a real dead zombie at the annual Fancy Dress Night.

They’re entertaining, funny, very nicely written stories, which are especially suitable for newly confident readers. The bracketed asides are particularly amusing. (One minor gripe: I found the apparently random use of line breaks throughout the text a little distracting.)
