Pittipat's Saucer of Moon
Illustrator: Maria NilssonThis dreamlike lullaby has clever twists and turns as our daring hero, tiny kitten Pittipat ventures on a night-time quest to drink up the saucer of cream otherwise known as the moon. He sets sail on a boat over treacherous waves that warn him against his mission, whilst a whale tries to tell him the moon is in fact a macaroon that he plans to enjoy himself. But Pittipat believes that his brothers and sisters are already enjoying the cream moon and he must join them. The hungry little cats all make it to the saucer in the sky before someone else comes along to claim the moon for themselves, but The Dark is a familiar face and soon everyone is back where they belong; moon in the sky and sleepy kittens back to their warm beds.
Evoking a Maurice Sendak-like dreamscape, this night-time rhyme is packed with clever language and definitely deserves to be read aloud. Children trying to read it themselves will struggle with some of the more tricky words but when listening to it they will have no trouble picking up on the sprightly story and dark dreamy nature of this little verse. Beautiful blue scenery and our cute little kitten make this a very unusual, but rather lovely and magical bedtime story.
