Rattle and Rap

Author: Susan Steggall

Bold and brightly coloured collage spreads tell the story of a train journey to the seaside. The minimal accompanying text is like a background soundtrack as the train goes ‘Rattle and rap, clickety clack’ across the level crossing, and ‘Whoooooosh, Whoooooosh!’ through the tunnel. The artwork has a contemporary feel with a fresh simplicity, yet there is plenty of detail to pick out in every scene – cyclists on the towpath as the train crosses a canal, boats and barges in the water, a kingfisher on the bank. Look carefully and you will start to recognise the passengers in each scene. Perhaps that is Grandma meeting her family at the journey’s end. A delightful picture book to share with a young audience.
