It is good to see a series putting emphasis on solid text information. These two books are packed with history, statistics, and pull-no-punches facts, but they also use graphics, photographs and personal stories to stimulate interest. Sexually Transmitted Diseases offers a long chapter on the causes, symptoms and treatments of every type of STD, but it also emphasises choice and responsibility. A graphic account of how to use a condom is only one of the practical and forthright suggestions. The statistical information is harrowing, and as 15- to 19-year-olds are most at risk, this book should be in every school library. Similarly, Eating Disorders will prove a goldmine of information to teenagers suffering from anorexia, bulimia, binge eating disorder or compulsive overeating – or those with friends or family with these conditions. There is emphasis on the dangers of dieting and good information on nutrition, as well as discussion of social, psychological and physical factors that can contribute to the likelihood of developing an eating disorder. Both books have glossaries, a list of websites, and helplines. Eating Disorders also has a list of six other books for further information. An important series for secondary schools.
