Sustainable Cities

Author: Angela Royston

Cities sustain themselves by eating themselves – this produces growth and is a process that can’t go on for ever because the more a city eats itself the more external resources it needs to keep the process going. After a graphic explanation of this situation, Royston goes on to look at sustainable buildings and technologies, pilot eco-communities, eco-workplaces, small-scale local food supplies and low-carbon transport. Excellent examples have been chosen and a logical and readable text is seasoned with effectively illustrative photographs. A welcome absence of hysteria prevails, making this a constructive view of our urban future which all urban decision-makers would do well to digest.
