The Deadsoul Project: The Night House Files

Author: Dan SmithIllustrator: Luke Brookes

Uncover the truth no one wanted you to hear… If you like a chilling mystery of a read, then this is the book for you.

This gruesome and fast-paced thriller is the first in a terrifying new series The Night House Files from award-winning author Dan Smith, which will look at unsolved mysteries kept top secret for years. This first story is based around the Alpine Heights tower block in the late 1970s, the home of Kyle and Lauren Lambert who have been told that their stepdad, Connor, has been killed in a landmine explosion in Northern Ireland, but return home to find him sitting at the kitchen table. However, he is not acting like the Connor they remember and when he suddenly disappears again, along with several of their neighbours, the pair soon realise that there is definitely something strange and scary happening and they are caught right in the middle of it. But will they escape to share their tale?

The tale jumps between a variety of text and visual styles with historical interview transcripts, classified file reports and the story of the tower block events as they affect Kyle and Lauren, which gradually reveal that the deaths and alien-like attacks would appear to be the result of a military experiment gone wrong but successfully covered up by the authorities for decades.

Smith’s gripping sci-fi thriller combined with Barrington Stoke’s accessible format gives us a creepy mystery-horror tale that will be enjoyed by a wide range of ages, although aimed at 11+ readers and possibly not one for the faint-hearted!
