The Global Garden

Author: Kate PettyIllustrator: Jennie Maizels

‘The world is a garden that grows everything we need’ is the text for this brief pop-up, pull-up, pull-out novelty production. It shows us simply how many of our necessities and all of our food is plant derived – a salutary message delivered in a friendly manner, but actually, not much more. Some of the paper engineering defeated my fumbling fingers even when I found it, which wasn’t always easy, and ‘everything we need’ is an oversimplification – witness the industrious group of moles which enlivens each spread, fertilising the soil with their own turds and using metal tools to do it. A pleasant piece of gift-shop ephemera, this, which could enliven the back of the car on the way home from Cornwall.
