The Hair Scare

Author: Jeffrey Fisher

Fisher is one of the most influential graphic artists of his generation. His stream of book jacket designs over the last twenty years or so (most famously for Captain Corelli’s Mandolin) has shaped the direction of design for publishing. The Hair Scare is an amusing foray into the children’s picture book world and is an example of an idea that is visually conceived, presumably out of an irresistible desire to draw outrageous hair topiary. Visually, the book is stunning, thanks to Fisher’s insistence on total control of design from start to finish. The typography is hand-rendered by the artist in characteristic style and completely integrated into the overall aesthetic. A fragile, eccentric storyline underpins this hilarious visual treat.
