The Hunt for the Fog Town Moose
The frustrations and surprises of nature photography are explored in this charming little story. A child and his dad are out in a small town in a foggy, snowy forest looking for a moose, where the dad’s fixation with his equipment defeats his quest, and the boy’s simpler point-and-click reaps rewards.
The comedy rests on how often the moose is on the page – watching as the dad unpacks all his equipment, hiding while the Fog Town children play hide and seek… Perhaps the best picture in this regard is of the dad on a mat with the child leaning on him, while in the background the moose waits patiently to be found. The depiction of the outdoors (and the fog in particular) is incredibly atmospheric.
Wrapped up in their snow gear, the man and boy search through the town and the forest, and apart from the dad addressing the child as ‘Buddy’ and the publisher’s blurb, this could be a man and his daughter, so little was needed to make this gender inclusive.
Nevertheless Trujillo has created a delightful and thoughtful story with a message that seizing the moment can often yield wonderful results when you’re out in the wild. And as the child-narrator puts it, ‘…if the forest is involved, it is an ADVENTURE!’
