The Lost Dogs
Illustrator: James BrownWhen labrador Luna’s family moves house and she is temporarily left with next door neighbours, she is not happy. Luna is a worrier, especially anxious that her boy, Charlie, will rush into danger if she’s not there, and she runs away to try to find him. The dog warden catches her, and takes her to a pound, where she meets Angel, a cocker spaniel whose head was wounded when she was thrown out of a car, and now has lost much of her memory, and Eddie, a lively three-legged terrier whose owner, Miss Holly, died.
Of course, they escape from the pound, and we follow the adventures of the trio as they attempt to find the homes that Luna and Angel have lost, and a new home for wise-cracking Eddie, while keeping out the way of the dog warden, who turns out not to be the kind and loving person that a dog warden ought to be at all. They rescue a number of other supposedly lost dogs, and there are happy endings all round. Readers must accept the idea that the dogs all understand human language, and cat language, too, and, like the famous Lassie, they are able to make the good humans do what they want, e.g. follow one of them to help with a crisis, when necessary.
A fun read, especially for dog-lovers.
