For me Edward Lear’s classic nonsense rhyme immediately conjures up Helen Oxenbury’s bear-like and hairy Quangle Wangle striding across the cover of the Puffin edition first published in the 1970s and her highly detailed Fimble Fowl. Voce’s images are altogether different. Her landscapes are technicoloured and her animals less detailed but jaunty and immediately endearing nevertheless, as they make their way to take up residence in the Quangle Wangle Quee’s capacious hat. And, do they know how to party!
