The Spectacular Space Loop
There has long been a need for graphic novels/comic strip adventures to more ably support our youngest readers, and this title perfectly meets that market. We are provided with a popular KS1 topic of space as the backdrop for this adventure with Cosmo. Many young readers will quickly feel an affinity with the central character and perhaps even aspire to have a role like his, that is until the new jetpack he is testing experiences a malfunction and he is spun off to the furthest reaches of the galaxy with no form of communication.
Our hero seems defiant in the face of such adversity and sets out to experience this unexpected adventure to the full! Along the way he meets every kind of creature a young space enthusiast could hope for: the anticipated alien encounter, a magician – which may help to hook in fantasy fans, and an unexplained creature originating from an egg…calling all readers into the realms of their deepest imagination, conjuring up the ever popular dilemma of whether to trust or fear a newly discovered species. This adventure packed plot and the vibrant engaging graphic illustrations should ensure all young comic enthusiasts feel satisfied.
There is also plenty to discuss at a deeper level: why is it that we are so quick to question a species on discovery; where does Cosmo find such bravery and resilience and how can we apply these values to everyday life; the central theme of trying to find your way home – and ultimately where this might be. This is a welcome addition which some graphics, especially those for a younger audience, sometimes lack. De Castro’s skill is also found in the unique transition at the end of the text – the end is in fact not the end…and readers need to flip the book over and begin again for part 2! This is an original and largely engaging feature with the illustrations and text in both parts being well defined, perhaps the only query would be how accessible this format is for all readers, with some who already find navigating text difficult potentially finding this a barrier. Overall however, this is a welcome addition for an audience that is often under resourced.
