Time Runs like a River
It is difficult to imagine any child not being enthralled by the evocative illustrations in this book – which seem to sweep you away, even from the end papers, and immerse you in the world of the river. Quietly but intentionally inclusive in their nature, and just as subtly guiding the reader on a journey both through the seasons and across time, this is a beautiful title to encourage the very young to engage with the world around them and to become keen observers of their world.
There have of course, been many books in recent years which almost act as a call to arms for young readers to see the value in the environment, the damage already done and the change needed. However, whereas some of these titles can be a little overwhelming for children, sometimes left feeling hopeless about the state of the world, this title is much more gentle in its mandate. The tone is of encouragement, noting the reciprocal benefits such mindful practice can have both for humans and the natural world, and is brave enough to trust the very young to begin to consider much deeper concepts such as time, change and our place in the universe.
Though the text comes in verse form and at times the rhythm feels a little uncertain, there is additional non-fiction support offered at the back of the book in the form of details on the different animals that live alongside the river, suggestions of activities to engage in and an interesting insight into the author’s approach to creating the title. All of which certainly add to the appeal of this book – both in the classroom and as a leisure read. Time runs like a river would be a useful addition to topics on the environment and habitats, would support PSHE discussions on personal growth, mindfulness or community action, and would be a lovely starting point for observational drawing – yet I suspect the author would be much more content to hear of young readers simply choosing the title spontaneously and flowing through it like the ever onwards rolling river.
