Unity Street School Saves the Planet
After ‘The Green Team’ came to Unity Street school and tell the children about the damaging effects of climate change, the children are inspired to take action to help save the planet. They decide to create a wild space in their school by transforming a disused part of the old playground. With more help from the Green Team together with their long-suffering premises officer, they clear the area of rubbish, raise funds, grow saplings, create a pond and plant wildflowers. Eventually the Unity Street wild meadow is opened.
This is a beautifully illustrated, awareness-raising picture-book which may encourage discussion about some of the impacts of climate change including plastic pollution and wildfires. It may also inspire children to take small steps of their own to make a difference. In fact, the book ends with a call to action with simple and achievable suggestions for young readers such as switching to reusable bottles and planting vegetables. It may also lead to children recognising and respecting efforts being made in their own neighbourhoods to create wild spaces in parks and playgrounds.
