What is a Peachick?
Illustrator: Clive McFarlandWhat is a peachick? The question but even more the various answers posited in this book will fascinate and entertain young children. Maybe, suggests the young narrator, who makes her appearance on the second spread, it’s a chick that grows in a pod, like a pea? Or perhaps it’s like a chickpea, which makes her wonder whether other vegetables could have chicks too – celery, carrots, runner beans? It’s a lovely example of taking an idea for a walk and exercising the imagination. Erika McGann’s text offers lots of opportunities for fun and playful moments, and Clive McFarland takes full advantage of these in his bright, characterful illustrations. I particularly like the running runner bean chick and the fierce dragon fruit chick. The story is also a great way to introduce children to new vocabulary. Do we learn what a peachick is? We do, though in a pleasing final twist, our narrator doesn’t.
