Wonder

Author: R J Palacio

Adam Lancaster, Librarian/Associate Assistant Headteacher, Monk’s Walk School, Welwyn Garden City, is one of three ‘exceptional’ librarians on the 2012 SLA School Librarian of the Year Honour List. Here he selects his book of the year for Books for Keeps.

Being in a profession where you are constantly reading and trying to keep that ‘must read’ pile from toppling over (or turning into multiple piles much to the wife’s annoyance) I sometimes find myself reading books like a conveyer belt. They arrive in one hand, are digested to the mind then passed out the other hand.

Every now and again I have to remind myself that I’m not reading for reading sake but that I love reading, that the reason I’m in this profession is because I have a passion for books and stories, books mean something to me. It’s not always easy, especially as that toppling pile isn’t necessarily filled with books that I classify as my first choice.

But every now and again a book comes along that conveyor that makes you take a step back and hit the emergency stop button. A book that makes you remember why you’re doing what you’re doing and reaffirms your believe in the power of story telling

For me, this year, that book was the fantastic R J Palacio’s encapsulating novel, Wonder  A rightly justified title as everything about this book really is wonder.

I originally stumbled across it having been told from a very reliable ‘booky’ source that this would be a title to look out for. Boy that really was an understatement. From the front cover to the closing line you are taken on a powerful, moving, life affirming discovery about the things that really matter in the world.

This is a book that will have an impact on you and leave a lasting impression even if you don’t want to admit it. Following the story of a boy with a genetic disorder that has altered his appearance Palacio weaves in and out of different characters allowing us to see from every angle the impact this unique boy has on everyone’s life. From the touching moments to laugh out loud parts and even the bits that make you fume Palacio does what all good authors do, hooks, holds and enriches your life.

If you’re looking to add a bit of wonder to your life then look no further!
