Father and Mother bear have three much-loved little bears, who have their doubts nonetheless. ‘Who is your favourite? We can’t all be the best’ they ask. Each one is answered reassuringly – ‘patches or no patches… girl or boy; it makes no difference. Three favourites. You’re all my favourites.’

A fine blend of gentleness and strength shines through both the expressive, unsentimental illustration and the clear well-paced text. The parents, laid back (literally!) and calm, know just what they’re about: unfussy, affirming, embracing; their offspring have the security to explore, to ask, to wonder, safe in the knowledge that they are held in their parents’ thoughts, much as the illustrations hold the text.
