National Share-a-Story Month 2025: Saving the World, One Book at a Time
The Federation of Children’s Book Groups (FCBG) has announced the theme for National Share-a-Story Month (NSSM) 2025: Saving the World, One Book at a Time.
Held annually throughout May, National Share-a-Story Month celebrates the power of storytelling and the joy of reading together. It offers a wealth of opportunities for reading, writing, and sharing stories.
This year’s theme highlights the transformative power of stories in building awareness, changing attitudes, and inspiring action to protect our environment.
You’ll find a specially curated booklist of environmentally themed children’s titles on the FCBG website now. Featuring a diverse selection of picture books, graphic novels, poetry, and fiction for young readers and teens, the list has been designed to inspire hope and celebrate positive change while addressing environmental challenges.
National Community Competition
New for NSSM 2025, the Federation is launching a National Community Competition, encouraging book groups, schools, libraries, and community organisations to host outdoor storytelling events that celebrate both reading and nature. Ideas could include a ‘booknic’ (book picnic), outdoor book swaps, or community storytelling sessions.
There are books to be won and author visits (in-person or virtual) from Anna Goodall and Lucy McRobert
The deadline for competition entries is 23rd June 2025.
Individual Competitions
There are also two individual writing competitions:
- Guppy Books Story Writing Competition: Inspired by the final book in the Maggie Blue trilogy by Anna Goodall.
- Sweet Cherry Books Non-Fiction Writing Competition: Inspired by Lucy McRobert’s Blue’s Planet series.
