Big Tiger

‘I am a BIG tiger’ declares the tiger cub protagonist in this engaging picture book. ‘I am far too busy being brave and bold and really grown up’. But is this really so? What parent has not been faced with such declarations as skills are demonstrated and boundaries tested. However, as this tiger cub reveals, you may be oh so grown up but you are not yet too old to be carried – or for bedtime – and most important, you are never too old for a hug.

Marta Altes is already well established as a picture book creature. Her bold colourful illustrations are always a delight bursting off the pages bringing her direct storytelling to life. While the hero of this story is a tiger cub, young readers will easily identify with recognisable situations. Indeed, there will come the subtle realisation that this cub is no longer the only cub in the family; that grown-up identity needs to be confirmed and recognised.  Altes’ text is direct, immediate – we don’t need any extra explanation. Her images are as direct making good use of every page ranging from child-centred vignettes to the drama of a double page spread as the young cub encounters a situation that really does need Mum.  This would be a reassuring, enjoyable family read with plenty to explore and talk about; a journey through the pages ending with that all-important hug.
