Good Reads: Hexthorpe Primary School
Hexthorpe Primary School won the inaugural World Book Day Award (WoBoD) receiving £10,000 from author James Patterson to spend on books for its school library. Philip Sheppard, Year 5 teacher, and his class created the winning entry, a stop motion animation featuring a host of children’s characters and books set to an original soundtrack sung by the children.
The Butterfly Club
Jacqueline Wilson, Doubleday Children’s Books, 978-0857533173, £12.99
Tina is smaller than Phil and Maddie, she had to be in an incubator when she was younger. When Tina was older she had to have a life changing operation. They put a box in her heart to pump it properly. When they were older gran gave these triplets a china doll. Tina’s doll held a small doll. Tina took it to school every day until Selma found it… My favourite bit was when Selma and Tina grew a butterfly garden and when Tina and Selma decided to be friends. I love this story! It is the best book I’ve read. The characters are special. The tale is so unique and it draws you in. Rebecca Eades
My Granny’s Great Escape
Jeremy Strong, Puffin, 978-0141322414, £5.99
I love this book because it makes you laugh. This book is about an old granny who likes a man called Lancelot who likes her too! But their evil sons don`t like each other. Somehow Lancelot gets a teddy bear, crawls into it and goes to granny’s house. They sneak off together so they could be happy – but when the sons find out they are furious. Plus the police come because Lancelot was a hell’s angel! This book is funny, full of adventure and superb illustrations. I would recommend this book to everybody and give it a ten out of ten!!! Bad Girls
Jacqueline Wilson illus Nick Sharrat, Yearling, 978-0440867623, £6.99
This book is a great I recommend it to all girls, It is about bullying and letting everyone be your friend. The main character is Mandy and the bullies are Kim, Sarah and Melanie. They make every day of Mandy’s life a misery. Fortunately, Mandy makes friends with a foster kid that lives opposite her (Tanya). She stands up to Mandy’s bullies. My favourite part is Tanya and Mandy are caught shoplifting and she calls the security man a pig! But you will have to read it to find out what happens in the END! Isabella Parker
George’s Marvellous Medicine
Roald Dahl illus Quentin Blake, Puffin, 978-0141346403, £5.99
George’s Marvellous Medicine is a really funny book. It’s about a 10 year old boy called George and he makes an incredible medicine that makes grandma go poof. He did it to get revenge on his grandma. His grandma was only awful when George’s mum and dad were out of the house. The character I like the most is George because he thinks things through before doing it. But in this book he forgot all about that, and made a FABULOUS medicine for grandma which she had to have at exact 12: 00 and when she gulped it down it made grandma …find out when you read the rest of the book!!! 100/100 I love this book!!
Mr Stink
David Walliams, HarperCollins Children’s Books, 978-0007279067, £6.99
I thought Mr Stink was really funny! It is about a girl named Chloe who invites a tramp called Mr Stink into her home. But little does she know that offering a tramp your garden shed and going behind your family would put you on TV! My favourite character is Raj who runs the local shop. He is funny because he keeps trying to make Chloe buy things on special offer like gone-off chocolate and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle stationery. David Walliams is clever because he puts Raj into all of his books so it makes me want to read more! Momin Khan
How to Survive Summer Camp
Jacqueline Wilson
This book is the best book I have ever read! The characters are just like real life people! My favourite character is a girl named Stella. I like her because she does like to break the rules sometimes (like me!) and she never gives up on something she has already started. Also, the story is very VERY interesting too. It takes place when Stella’s parents are going on a honeymoon and Stella has to get ‘dumped’ in a summer camp called ‘evergreen.’ Stella is not happy at first but once she starts making new friends and discovering new stuff, her frown is turned upside-down by some of the most funny (and weird!) adventures ever! This book is really good and I would recommend this to anyone above the age of 9. Ruth Uyiekpen
Lunch Lady and the Cyborg Substitute
Jarrett J Krosoczka. Alfred A. Kopf, 978-0375846830, £3.99
When you read it, it makes you laugh out loud. It is so funny! The main character is a dinner lady who becomes a super hero who fights against a supply teacher who is really a robot! Her friends are the little kids and the other dinner ladies who help her in her mission. The book is full of fantastic cartoons with the story told in the comic book format. I would recommend it to anyone who likes superheroes, comics and having a laugh! There are more in the series so I can’t wait to read them! Oscar Andryszosyk
A Tiny Bit Lucky Tom Gates
Liz Pichon, Scholastic, 978-1407148748, £6.99
It’s about a boy called Tom who likes watching TV but his mum and dad want him to go outside and play. When his dad Finally stops nagging him to go out, he suggests that June, his next door neibour, comes round to play… I would give this book 5 stars. Jessica
