Call the Puffins!
Illustrator: Ella OkstadLittle Muffin the puffin is ready to take a big step towards growing up. She’s about to head off to the island of Egg to join the Puffin Rescue Team. She’s been busy swotting up with her dad, but she’s still nervous. There’s nothing to fear though – she passes the test with flying colours and joins the new recruits. Young readers will understand both the excitement and the trepidation Muffin is feeling, and will be reassured to see her settle in and make new friends. The story reaches an exciting climax when Muffin and her new bestie Tiny have to cope with a real emergency, and Muffin has to be particularly calm and unflappable, as the puffin promise has it.
This genuinely charming story gently explores themes of fitting in and of rising to challenges. Muffin may have feet that turn up, unlike the other puffins, but this little difference certainly doesn’t hinder her, in fact it turns out to be an advantage. Her adventure will be enjoyable and satisfying reading for youngsters and Ella Okstad’s black and white illustrations of puffins galore are very appealing indeed. Muffin and her friends will be back for more adventures and this series is set to take off nicely.
